Dumpwatch 2007: Torre Tells Georgieboy To Stuff His Offer Where The Sun Doesn't Shine

After being left to twist in the wind, Torre slipped down to Tampa today and basically told Steinbrenner and Co. to fuck off, rejecting their $5MM one year deal (with bonuses for each round of playoffs secured) in the hour long meeting.

It's an end of an era to be sure. You gotta respect the guy for leaving with his dignity intact but the bench just won't be the same without him.

We'll miss you, Joe.

“I have filed papers with the New York City Board of Elections to change my status as a voter and register as unaffiliated with any political party. Although my plans for the future haven’t changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our City.

“A nonpartisan approach has worked wonders in New York: we’ve balanced budgets, grown our economy, improved public health, reformed the school system and made the nation’s safest city even safer.

“We have achieved real progress by overcoming the partisanship that too often puts narrow interests above the common good. As a political independent, I will continue to work with those in all political parties to find common ground, to put partisanship aside and to achieve real solutions to the challenges we face.

“Any successful elected executive knows that real results are more important than partisan battles and that good ideas should take precedence over rigid adherence to any particular political ideology. Working together, there’s no limit to what we can do.”

Dumpwatch 2007: A Less Rosier View

Eight months of bickering have finally come to an end, as Rosie O'Donnel was granted an early release from her contract, likely due to the latest heated exchange with Elizabeth Hasselback on Wednesday.

ABC issued this statement:

"We had hoped that Rosie would be with us until the end of her contract three weeks from now, but Rosie has informed us that she would like an early leave. Therefore, we part ways, thank her for her tremendous contribution to 'The View' and wish her well."

Rosie and Barbara Walters have also issued polite and PC statements. Hasselback's been mum but you just know she's dancing a jig of happiness. And, of course, The Donald had to get one last swipe in: "A great service was done by getting her off the airwaves ... she's a disaster."

Dumpwatch 2007: Wills Is Searching For A New Queen

I liked Kate Middleton and Prince William together. They seemed to compliment one another and word was that even the Queen's inner circle approved of the match and welcomed Kate with open arms. She is beautiful, smart and classy; perfect woman to groom to be Queen.

Ah, but like most young love affairs, there's wasn't meant to be. William, 24, and Kate, 25, have officially confirmed their amicable split.

Young ladies across Britain must be rejoicing their King-to-be is once again on the market.

Dumpwatch 2007: Upper East Side Elitists

The New York Times has reported that the legendary 10021 zip code is about to get much more elite, dumping half of its residents this summer into two new zips on the Upper East Side. And how are residents taking the slight? A few choice quotes:

“The truth is, there are some people whose whole identity is their ZIP code,” said Michele Kleier, the president of the real estate brokerage Gumley Haft Kleier. "I don’t think everybody is going to move out of 80th Street, but obviously this is the most famous and most desired ZIP code in the city and in America,” she said.

Mr. Talese said, “The first thing you think of is your stationery. We still have the 212 area code, don’t we?” (He does.)

Mr. Wolfe was equally sanguine. “I’ll try to take it like a man,” he said.

Thankfully Mayor Bloomie's spokewhore realistically weighs in: “The mayor doesn’t favor one ZIP code over another,” Stu Loeser, said.
